Chapter Eleven

Spencer

“I don’t want you to go with him tomorrow,” I say in bed to Grace.

She sighs and in the dark, I hear her turn toward me. “You always do this,” her fingertips graze my chest, “then we call it off and you change your mind all over again.”

“Yeah but this time it’s different,” I sit up and click the bedside lamp on.

“Half an hour ago you were turned on because I was going to spend the day with your boss,” she says and her makeup-less eyes blink several times in the amber lighting.

I can hardly deny that. I goaded her about Huey. Talked about them in the hotel the whole time she rode me cowgirl. But now? Now the ugly tentacles of dread twist around me and compress my chest, almost stop me breathing. Certainly stop me sleeping.

“Is it because of those stupid handcuffs he told you he’s bought?” she murmurs.

“It’s not just that,” I say and try to arrange my thoughts sufficiently to make sense of my feelings. That whole bondage bit is scary though when my wife is due to be hundreds of miles away from me with another man.

And so it should be Spencer you fool. What kind of husband would even imagine something as dangerous as that? Allowing another man not only to take your wife half way across the country, but to tie her up in some faceless hotel room? Possibly put her life in danger!

“I won’t even let him use them,” she says and snuggles against my chest, kisses it, “not if you don’t want me to.”

“It's the thought of not being there with you. We’ve never done that before.”

“Yes, but you knew that when you told him I’d go, didn’t you?”

“Wouldn’t you feel weird if I wasn’t there with you?”

“Of course I will. It won’t be the same. But….”

“What about around the show itself?” I stroke her hair, “I’d have thought you’d be bored out of your mind at a software show.”

“I told Kay I’d keep a lookout for anything related to the wellbeing sector,” she says, “anything that might be useful for the business.”

“So she knows where you’re going?” I twist around and stare down at her. Grace, you’ve got to be kidding.

“I told her I’m going with you. As part of your job.”

“She might put two and two together. She knows Huey.”

“Why would she put anything together?” Grace kisses my chest again.

But with fear dominating me now, I can’t shake the possibility. The thought of other people knowing my wife is having an affair with my boss would be too much to handle. Impossible to deal with.

“Look, I’ve booked the day off work,” Grace says, “Huey’s got the tickets. See how you feel in the morning. If you still really don’t want me to go, then I won’t. I’d never do anything like this unless you wanted me to.”

I let out a deep exhalation. Then inhale relief. I mean, I knew she wouldn’t go if I made it clear I didn’t want her to.
